English artist Damon Hirst, known for his frozen blood head sculptures, and whole sharks preserved in formaldehyde has done it again, he’s managed to shock us all by using a real human skull for his latest art piece (click on image for detailed view).

Called, “For the Love of God” his new work consists of over 8,601 diamonds, weighing a total of 1,106.18 carats, covering the entire surface of a platinum cast of a human skull (retaining the original teeth), with a large pink diamond sitting in the center of its forehead, valued at $4.2M alone.

It does bring a new meaning to, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”. In this case the diamonds are adorning that of a 35 year old European male believed to have been alive between 1720 and 181

Damien Hirst did NOT do the “frozen blood head sculptures” referred to in the opening text.

That piece is by Marc Quinn, and was a singular piece, which is rumored to have been destroyed when it’s owner, Charles Saatchi, was having remodeling done and a worker unplugged the freezer it was kept in…

Nice teeth for something that old. I wonder if the teeth are even real. I think black onyx would look better in my opinion. I believe diamonds are over-rated.

Shortly before I came across this picture, with the details of it’s structure and reference to part of it’s value;I was reading about water shortages, famine and crippling poverty. What to say about this ostentatious piece of “art”.I think I just said it.

how the HELL did he afford to do that? and if he had contributors who helped him to (which he must have)how the HELL did they afford it? And how did he convince people to give him money for this? AYE!

I hate this fucking thing. What a waste of time. It says nothing. It means nothing. How many people had to die digging those goddamned diamonds out of the ground so this asshole could make himself a shiny, shiny skull? It’s RE!TAR!DED!

If Paris Hilton were to see this she’d say: “Thats Hot”. And soon after she’d put it in her will that she’d like for this to be done on her skull.

I wonder how many slaves were abused mining those diamonds. Cannot put a price on their misery!

This guy that made this sculpture out of diamonds also made another one of a cat and a dog. Here is the link. http://www.quazen.com/Science/Biology/The-Genetic-Code.53412

I think that this piece, whether intentionally or not, makes a powerful statement about all of the senseless abuse and bloodshed over this “precious” gem stone. If the diamond market weren’t exclusively controlled by De Beers, the value of the platinum used to cast the skull would far outstrip the value of diamonds

His teeth are still in pretty good shape too.

Yeah…I’m pretty sure you can relate diamonds to water-shortage…..

  17. 2008.06.06 00:15

cpdiety i couldnt agree more. the message IS that diamonds are a “blood” stone. A skull encrusted with diamonds. what else could the artist be saying.
