“When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc. How many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror i.e., they can see you, but you can’t see them. There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms or bathroom or bedrooms.
It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at?
CONDUCT THIS SIMPLE TEST:
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.
However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! (There is someone seeing you from the other side). So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the “fingernail test.” It doesn’t cost you anything. It is simple to do.
Whereas with a two-way mirror, the silver is on the surface. Keep it in mind! Make sure and check every time you enter in hotel rooms. May be someone is making a film on you. “
This one is false. Here are few tips how you can detect real one:
1. Realize that a popular email about two-way mirrors you may have received is a hoax. It is simply an urban legend that has gained credibility as it has gone from one recipient to the next. You can check suspect stories you hear against the urban legends database at Snopes.com.
2. Understand that a two-way mirror is specially treated glass that allows light to pass through in both directions, but which also reflects light back into the room. If lights are off on one side of the mirror and on in the other, those on the bright side will see a reflection and those on the dark side will see through the glass.
3. Know that because they function as windows, two-way mirrors are generally set into the wall; they are not hung on a wall. If the mirror is not flush with the wall, it is most likely not a two-way mirror.
4. Test the mirror. Cup your hands around your eyes and place your face next to the mirror. If it is a two-way mirror, you will be able to see something on the other side—unless there is absolutely no light on that.
5. Turn out the lights. The two-way mirror only works if light is more intense on one side. With the lights off, you will see through a two-way mirror. It may take a few moments to detect the mirror as your eyes adjust.
6. Tap the mirror. A two-way mirror will produce a hollow sound like a window because there is no backing on the other side. A regular mirror will sound dull.

It would be simple enough to defeat this by placing another piece of glass against the silver side of the two way mirror.
Additionally, if you are paranoid about that kind of thing, you should inspect the mirror for spots where it is non-reflective (black.) What this indicates is that the reflective surface has been scratched off, possibly to allow for a peep-hole. I would be that this is much more common than 2 way mirrors. Any scum-bag working for a motel could easily create a little peephole for fun while at work.
PS, those javascript ads are super annoying
Did you notice how your “source” says the exact opposite of what the article says? It’s finny how you can cite anything as a source, but unless your audience reads it, they will never know how little credibility you actually have.
This is not a 100% safe test. The fingernail test only tells you on which side a piece of glass is coated to function as a mirror. The 2-way mirror could stil have its reflective coating on the backside of the mirror, leaving a gap between your fingernail and the image of your nail giving you the false sensation that you can safely pick your nose in front of the mirror
You dummy; if you actually follow the link to the Snopes article, it shows that your claim is FALSE!
How idiotic – the source link tells you this is FALSE.
crazy! kinda cool that i know this stuff now!
Read it again, geniuses. The first portion is a quote of the misinformation being spread. The remainder of the posting tells you how to truly detect a two-way mirror (some of which can also be found on the Snopes website).
To the administrator who posted this, I recommend using HTML formatting to ensure people understand which words are quoted and which are yours. A blockquote and emphasis should do the trick nicely.
I read the article and then I read the comments and then I wept for humanity. 90% of the people who took time out of their otherwise undoubtedly ‘happening’ lives to respond to this posting appear to have completely missed the author’s (numbered!!) points.
Or is it just me?
This one is false. Here are few tips how you can detect real one:.
you guys missed that statement.
anyway, 2 way mirrors are NOT coated like regular mirrors are, with silver. they’re chemically treated, though I forget the exact process
There is an adage in my language {Yoruba in Nigeria} that says: The end of the wisdom of somebody is just the beginning of the wisdom of another person.”
I can’t believe people are actually arguing over whether this is true or not. does nobody have the ability to think for themselves? surely you know what a 2 way mirror is made of – we’ve all seen one and it says above what it is. USE YOUR BRAIN! thats how we got to the top of the food chain!
you can’t just rely on other people to supply you with information – thats why the media and government can do whatever the hell they want, because people accept what they say without question. Who told you that everything on Snopes was true?
anyway, knowing what a 2 way miror actually is, its pretty obvious whenever you come across one. I mean, you can tell just by looking at the edges. although apparently my iq is 135 which gets kind of annoying sometimes, because its hard to understand how average people think.
