Years ago I had the un-fortune of being part of and accident on the San Mateo bridge, just off the high rise heading west. I won't go into detail, but I was driving an old Plymouth Volare wagon (a medium-sized "tank") and after it was all over, I was the only one that drove away. We shut down the bridge for about 45 minutes (what a claim to fame). Cal Trans and CHP, though were like right on it and did an extraordinary job sorting out the mess.

At the moment, I don't live in the Bay area, but when I visit I occasionally use that bridge. It is a good avenue to cross from the east bay to the peninsula without going down into San Jose then back up.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge named, described, and shown IS the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge (aka the Chesapeake Bay Bridge or just "Bay Bridge") and is located completely in Maryland. It connects Anne Arundel County to Queen Anne's county on the eastern shore of Maryland. NOWHERE in the listing does it state that the bridge shown is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which is a completely different structure in Virginia.

I assume that the authors of this post MEANT to describe the Bay Bridge-Tunnel, but found information on the shorter Bay Bridge in Maryland, which was one of the longest bridges at the time it was built. All of you people bitching about the information being wrong, YOU ARE WRONG. Everything described is correct, from the name to the length to the location in the state of Maryland. You are thinking of a completely different Bridge-Tunnel complex that is further south and connects the mainland of Virginia to the Virginian part of the Delmarva peninsula.

I live on Prince Edward Island and the Confederation bridge is STILL called the "fixed link" by both islanders and residents of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.Having been on the bridge many many times,I can assure you that the view is incredible from the aerial photographs, but the sides of the bridge are so high you cannot see anything except concrete unless youre riding in a high-sided vehicle. The 12.9 km structure was completed in May 1997 and carries two lanes of traffic. It is the worlds longest bridge over ice covered waters.

How about adding Google Maps links to each of the bridges?

I've crossed the Rio-Niteroi bridge many times, and it's spectacular, especially at night. But I can't believe this list did not include the Interprovincial Bridge that connects Cotnam Island in Ontario with Morrison Island in Quebec (Canada). The pilings alone took two years to install and when the bridge was completed in 1968 the grnad opening was attended by the Queen and Prince Philip.

Thx Andersh. Ya, I just saw a National Geographic on the Storebæltsbroen (Great Belt in english), which connects Sweden to Denmark. Since it was only completed in 1998, perhaps thats why it isn't on this list. I would definately recommend having this bridge on the Top 10 Longest bridges, since it has the 3rd longest main span (1.6km) in the world, even if the total length is only 10 miles.
