Top Five Cratures That Scared Greeks

1.Cyclopes

Cyclopes Picture

The Cyclopes were almost like human beings but of a gigantic size and with only one eye in the middle of their heads. Essentially there were three of them: Brontes (thunderer), Steropes (Lightener), and Arges (Bright).

2.Harpies

Harpies Picture

The Harpies, Furies, Erinyes, Keres, Fates and Graes are hords of female monsters often associated with death, fate and the execution of divine ordeals on the human race.

3.Medusa

Medusa Picture

The gorgon Medusa, unlike her sisters, was a mortal. Born beautiful, Medusa was seduced by Poseidon, disguised as a horse, in one of Athena’s temples. Athena became incensed and turned Medusa into a fearsome winged creature. Originally, Medusa was depicted as a horse with wings, then a woman with equine hindquarters and wings on her hair. At a later date, portraits of her reveals that her teeth were transformed into the tusks of a wild boar, her black tongue protuded and became too large for her mouth, her hands became brazen claws and her wings were changed into serpents. Her gaze alone turned men to stone.

4.Minotaur

Minotaur Picture

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur is a monstrous double, sometimes with the head of a bull and the body of a man or, conversely, with the body of a bull and the head of a man.

5.Chimera

Chimera Picture

The Chimera is a fire-breathing monster. She is usually represented as having a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail. She is represented in many pictures as having a goat’s head in the middle of her back.

  8. Dopplerdog February 19th, 2008 at 6:22 am

Not just three Cyclopes. On the island of Sicily lived Polyphemus, the one that Odysseus blinded in the Odyssey, and he lived with an entire family of Cyclopes.

  11. Jason February 19th, 2008 at 7:18 am

Don’t forget Scylla and Charabdis, the Sirens, Lamia, the multi-headed Hydra, the various dracones or sea monsters the gods sent to punish mortals (such as Andromeda and Laocoon), the Stymphalian birds, etc.

  12. Brad February 19th, 2008 at 7:24 am

The three cyclopes you mention by name were associated with the age of the titans. They forged Zeus’s lightning bolt. However, there were many lesser cyclopes considered contemporaries of the Greeks themselves. Such as the cyclopes Odysseus slew.

Also mispelled hordes. He spelled it incorrectly as “hords.”

  14. a douchebag February 19th, 2008 at 7:37 am

Could you possibly create a more useless weblog in order generate banner ad revenue?

probably not. I can’t believe this is on the 1st page of digg. seriously diggers… you are douchebags.

  15. Mr. Cratures February 19th, 2008 at 7:50 am

Correction commenters…the Greeks did indeed call creatures “cratures” and they called monsters “nomsters”

    Clearly he means craters.

  24. Scott February 19th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Yeah… here’s the thing. Don’t post it if you spent less then 5 minutes typing it up. I’m not even a huge Greek mythology buff, but I could have typed this up in the time it takes to microwave some popcorn. Seriously… have some pride in your work.

  25. Sage February 19th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

wait those CRATURES don’t scare me…… oh, wait, never mind.

nice use of spellcheck by the way

  26. Horatio February 19th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

You say Greeks like they don’t exist anymore. Maybe you are unaware there is still a whole country of them. Maybe you meant the Ancient Greeks?

  27. cdog6000 February 19th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Wasn’t there an entire island full of cyclops in the Odyssey?

  28. Captain Pedantic February 19th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Before embarking on any sort of Odyssey pertaining to Greek Mythology it helps to have a bit more knowledge than that contained in “My First: Greek Mythology” pop up book. The list is inaccurate at best, woefully lacking in detail or background, misspelled and grammatically creative (but not in a good way).

It’s ironic that the most worthless “List Post” ever created on The Internet could have been infinitely better by using that same Internet to research the creatures. Coupled with Dictionary.com it could have been a winner and worthy of being on the front page of Digg. Unfortunately it is nothing more than a pariah of ill-thought out, unresearched ramblings of an Internet ne’er-do-well.

    Well done.

  29. Tom February 19th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

I saw a movie once where Charles Dance scared a Greek.

I have not used my real email because it wouldn’t fit in that weird little box.

Shut up about the spelling, you damn nerds. Back to your nerd-holes.

  30. soxfanpdx February 19th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

can’t believe I read that crap AND left this stupid comment.

  31. rezwits February 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

These guys can’t relax. They are all over the comments/forums/chat rooms/blogs/etc of the net. They are the spell checking crew. They put the hammer down on anyone and anything. Seriously, the haters of the errors on the Internet. They cause people to argue over the littlest things. What can we do?

    Laters…

  32. M AHSAN February 21st, 2008 at 11:58 am
