Unusual Weapons Of The World

In 1718, James Puckle of London, England, demonstrated his new invention, the “Puckle Gun,” a tripod-mounted, single-barreled flintlock gun fitted with a multishot revolving cylinder. This weapon fired nine shots per minute at a time when the standard soldier’s musket could be loaded and fired but three times per minute. Puckle demonstrated two versions of the basic design. One weapon, intended for use against Christian enemies, fired conventional round bullets, while the second variant, designed to be used against the Muslim Turks, fired square bullets, which were believed to cause more severe and painful wounds than spherical projectiles. The “Puckle Gun” failed to attract investors and never achieved mass production or sales to the British armed forces. One newspaper of the period observed following the business venture’s failure that “those are only wounded who hold shares therein.”

According to the Patent Office of the United Kingdom, “In the reign of Queen Anne, the law officers of the Crown established as a condition of patent that the inventor must in writing describe the invention and the manner in which it works.” James Puckle’s 1718 patent for a gun was one of the first to provide a description.

Hiram Maxim (born 1853) invented the Maxim Silencer or Suppressor: that attached to the front of the barrel of a pistol and allowed the firearm to be fired without a loud bang. Invented in 1909, the Maxim Suppressor was the first commercially successful silencer.

What kind of round does this gun fire and how old is it?

some of those look like they have some history behind it. The golden Ak-47 looks like it came from one of the African warlord’s house, or from Sadaam’s palace guards (allegedly armed with golden ak-47s?). The lion dagger is cool, I’ve seen a dragon one like that from China.

Those are quite possible some of the coolest looking guns I have ever laid eyes on. The seventh one down would be an awesome wall ornament.

Make a visit to the Arms and Armour colection at the Philadephia Museum of Art. You’l find rooms full of weapons like these.

Saddam and his family would give gold AKs to visiting guests at a party. But the joke was on whoever got the rifle, because they would later take this person out to a courtyard and execute them with it.

  10. SDC October 28th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Nicholai, that’s an American 180, one of the relatively few 22 LR submachineguns ever made. Most of them have a shoulder-stock with a longer barrel, and the magazine holds 275 rounds stacked in a helix.

  11. Barry October 28th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

    Nicholai,
I believe that (4th gun from the bottom)is a model of the 1927 Thompson submachinegun, same as the 1st gun. The caliber is .45 ACP.

  12. J October 28th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

The gold AK might be the one of the ones from Iraq, there is a set of Iraqi coins underneath it and probably some old Iraqi money next to it.

Not really sure how an AK47, MP5, Tommy Gun, Pistol, or Crossbow could be considered “unusual weapons”. Sure they have bozaar paint jobs, but this article looks like a lot of DIGG bait to me.

  14. Trevor October 28th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

These are really funny guns. THey should make more funny guns. Guns are funny. I’m laughing alot about how funny these guns are. Who would buy these funny guns? They are so funny. You guys are so funny! Funny posting people, I wish I was funny, but I’m dead.

  15. Matt October 28th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

    @ Nicholai,

looks like an American 180. Intrigueing concept, enormous magazine capacity and cyclic rate.

  16. Rubab October 28th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    Interesting

  17. rabbity October 28th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    Nicholai,

Gun_9 is a Tommy gun. It was made by Thompson Arms or Thompson Center Arms, something like that. Thus, the name Tommy. It shoots .45ACP, they were produced in the early 20th century (popular in the 1930s).

I agree, the 10th one down however, gun_10.jpg is not unusual. You can buy ones just like it at Dick’s sporting goods. It’s just a dismantled crossbow.

#6 is called a duck’s foot pistol. You can find more information about it here.

  26. kevin November 15th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

    Nicholai

SDC and Matt are right, the top-load round magazine is an American 180, full auto, 22lr. It was designed primarily for prison guards due to the low power of the cartridge, yet high rate of fire. The low recoil made it extremely easy to shoot accurately, due to less recoil and low operating weight of moving parts. I saw a demo in the late 70’s of a guy writing his name (in cursive) on a piece of plywood. He also sawed concrete blocks in half by shooting in the same spot on full auto. It never really caught on. They are highly collectible where legal to own.
